UNLOCKING THE TRUTH “Kriss Kross this isn’t. Lock up your daughters, America: these sixth-grade metalheads from Flatbush, Brooklyn are on a mission to rock your socks off.”

HOLY SHIT.

I hope to meet these lil’ bros someday, and tell them my story, and to thank them. Growing up a black metalhead is tough but they are so important. I hope they know that they are the future. I hope they never give up. I watched their video today and they inspire me to be better. They helped me remember so much love and importance in that music and holy shit, we need them. Fucking HORNS UP, LITTLE DUDES. I SERIOUSLY WANT TO MEET YOU AND BUY YOUR ALBUM?? IF YOU HAVE ONE

his stance, look at that kid’s fucking battle stance and tell me that isn’t a future warrior of metal. I’ll fight you to the death

yes.

Does anyone commenting on this gifset understand what Bryke was saying at all?

They weren’t saying “she can’t love herself without her cool powers.” They say it right there, she feels as though she’s screwed up Aang’s legacy because of this loss, because she’s had it drilled into her for seventeen years that she’s the Avatar because of her bending, because there’s a connection to elements and probably little things she did unconsciously in her everyday life that are now gone, she feels as though she’s let down a line of great and amazing people and just for one day, for one day she wants some time to mourn it has nothing to do with her powers it has to do with her identity and the identity people have given her

I’m sorry, but even if Bryke doesn’t always have the best execution in the tales they tell, their messages are right, and since the majority of us are over fifteen we should be able to watch a story that shows rather than directly tells.

image

What even is that bolded.

Let’s not have a discussion about Bryke and their faults when it comes to showing not telling.

But, it’s resolved as quickly as it came up. Korra never learns to love herself without being the Avatar. This would have made her the perfect foil to Aang. Aang learns that he has to be the Avatar and can’t be just Aang the Airbender whereas Korra could learn to that she is not just the Avatar. It’s about knowing your responsibility but not letting it be the sole identity. Hell, that’s why it is told to Aang why the Avatar isn’t just some spirit. It needs that human element and if Korra doesn’t learn that, she ultimately fails.

Bryke failed at execution and even some fans of the show have said that the ending was a disappointment.

___

Bolded for the truth.

In other words, Korra should have been her own damn crackerjack box prize. Instead people rush in to save her - excuse me. MEN rush in to save her. Mako tries to save her all ‘But my sperm love you!’ and then Aang shows up all ‘Well girl, you messed this up, but my manly spirit vibes are gonna free you - kapang. Feel the touch of a true master.’ (Which is so anti original Aang, I can’t even).

Bryke  can fanwank/handwavium after the fact all the eff they want. It’s not what they showed. They set Korra up as a little lost girl, forever being pushed around, defined, mansplained to, defeated. manipulated by various men.  It’s Deux Ex Manima all the damn time for her.

And it’s just ONE of the many things wrong with LoK.

It COULD have been an amazing journey; hubris, the fall, a journey of self realization. It COULD have been a counter-opposite journey to Aang’s.

It wasn’t.

Mark my words. LoK2 is going to be full of the SAME kind of fail. THE SAME. All tears and fears and Korra running around, confused and lesser than the prior male avatar in a universe devoid of its own history.

I tell you the only reason Avatar Kyoshi was so badass is because there wasn’t any love-story, teenage hormone, girls automatically have these particular  self esteem issues, it’s always a girl-war over a guy, bullshit storylines with her.

Everytime I start to get mad about it all? I remind myself that despite Sokka’s arc of coming to treat the women around him well? The writers set the universe up to make Katara be Aang’s ‘prize’ for saving the world. His PRIZE. Not his friend. Not a relationship he cherished. Not a relationship that in a time might grow into more. SHE was his PRIZE.

With that mentality, with that inability to SEE/COMPREHEND the institutional patriarchal tropes they were employing? it is not exactly a surprise that there’s so much effing up when you have to make ‘the prize’ the center . Their solution was to NOT make her the true center.  But rather to tell tales AROUND her. Which explains why she couldn’t make/find her own resolution, and others had to give it to her. Cause Korra was nothing more than a tool to tell the story of the men in her life - straight up. And  I know that fact hurts; and I know many won’t admit that because they want to believe. But when you hide from the truth and don’t demand better? Creators feel they shat diamond studded cookies and can do no better - when they really, really can.

And crap - I need Tumblr Savior to to stop me from even reading this stuff on my dash, cause Korra just brings the bitter disappointment.

A Proud Moment.

I don’t have a degree in eating blocks of cream cheese, which sucks because I’m sure it would add a lot of value to my CV. (Instead, I have “lying, poorly”. Does that count?).

when your little girl
asks you if she’s pretty
your heart will drop like a wineglass
on the hardwood floor
part of you will want to say
of course you are, don’t ever question it
and the other part
the part that is clawing at
you
will want to grab her by her shoulders
look straight into the wells of
her eyes until they echo back to you
and say
you do not have to be if you don’t want to
it is not your job
both will feel right
one will feel better
she will only understand the first
when she wants to cut her hair off
or wear her brother’s clothes
you will feel the words in your
mouth like marbles
you do not have to be pretty if you don’t want to
it is not your job (Caitlyn Siehl)

I am really interested in silence. In inarticulacy also, which isn’t the same as silence. As a performer I like looking at the gaps between what people want to communicate and what they can communicate. I love good filmmaking that isn’t just about really proficient writers of dialogue, who think that everybody’s really articulate and everybody can hear each other really well. That doesn’t feel true to me, actually. I mean, that’s a fantastical universe.
